Of all the gushy things that fans of Julianna Smoot have to say about the Obamas' new social secretary, the most telling may be that she could make even "the ask" seem fun. Supporters traveled from around the country in hopes the rally would re-energize Congress to take up the volatile issue. Some lawmakers oppose any attempt to help an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants become U.S. citizens while others insist on stronger border controls first. President Barack Obama, who promised to make overhauling the immigration system a top priority in his first year, sought to reassure those at the rally with a video message presented on giant screens at the National Mall. The president said he was committed to working with Congress this year on a comprehensive bill to fix a "broken immigration system."

SNAP Criticizes Pope's Response To Sex Abuse

A national advocacy group says Pope Benedict XVI's apology on sexual abuse by clergy doesn't go far enough. Years of research, months of false starts, dozens of failed prototypes, countless nights of sleeping on the floor at the office. "Everything comes together at this moment," said Brad Harrison, a wiry 40-year-old with salt-and-pepper-hair, standing at the end of his makeshift assembly line in Rockford. He tightened a few screws, snapped on the cover plate and then took a moment to admire the harmonica, with its handsome dark-wood comb and aerodynamic design.
