Salesman Charged With Sex Assault Of 86-Year-Old

LA GRANGE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A 23-year-old Alabama man, in the Chicago area over the holiday weekend to sell magazines door-to-door, has been charged with breaking into the La Grange home of an 86-year-old woman and sexually assaulting her.

George H. Lucas, of Clanton, Ala., was in the Chicago area selling magazines door-to-door, investigators said. Lucas was working for Midwest Claring, of Hazel Crest, which is a distributor for Connecticut-based Paragon Sales, according to a release from Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart's office.

He had been with a crew from Wisconsin last Friday afternoon. The group had targeted the La Grange Highlands area about 2:30 p.m. After he had visited 25 houses, Lucas was supposed to be picked up about 8:30 p.m. by his co-workers, the release said. When they failed to show up, he drank shots of vodka with a neighborhood resident, the release said.

Lucas then walked to a nearby gas station, about 10 p.m., to buy cigarettes, after which he began wandering the neighborhood. He stayed in the victim's backyard for a while, allegedly before going into her home.

Though investigators found a cut screen, Lucas told police he entered through an unlocked door.

Lucas ate and watched TV in the victim's home, while she slept, before seeing her in her bedroom. He entered her room, covered her mouth, and is alleged to have sexually assaulted her before fleeing and throwing her home phone out of the house. As he fled, Lucas left a bag of magazine sales information in the victim's backyard, including information identifying him.

As the victim was being treated at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital in La Grange and talking to investigators early Saturday, Lucas arrived at the same emergency room, complaining he was sick and spitting up blood. Sheriff's police recognized his name from the identifying information left at the scene, and arrested him.

Lucas is charged with home invasion and aggravated criminal sexual assault, both class X felonies. He is being held on $750,000 bond. His next court date is set for Sept. 16.
