School Attendence Optional Friday After Threat

BATAVIA, Ill. (Aurora Beacon News) ― Rotolo Middle School students won't be penalized for staying home Friday as long as their parents call the west suburban school to report their absence.

"Our policy is that we'll excuse all absences tomorrow," School Superintendent Jack Barshinger said Thursday. "We've left that (the decision whether to send students to school in the wake of a threat that there would be violence at the school on Friday) totally in the hands of the parents. That's not a decision we can make for them."

School officials March 20 discovered graffiti written on a bathroom stall stating that a violent incident would occur April 4. They announced the discovery Tuesday and implemented security precautions Wednesday that included police patrols inside the school and grounds, searches of bags and purses, restrictions of students' movements within the school and cancellation of all after-school activities. Those precautions will be followed through Friday.

"I think we've taken all the steps we can take to provide a good learning environment and the safest place to be in Batavia on Friday," Barshinger said.

To report a student's absence, call (630) 879-4671.
