New 'Superbug' Case Reported In North Aurora
School Disinfected With Pupils Present
NORTH AURORA, Ill. (CBS) ―
A new case of the drug-resistant "superbug" has been reported at an elementary school in North Aurora.
Officials at Fearn Elementary School, at 1600 Hawksley Lane in North Aurora, found out about a confirmed case of the MRSA bacterium Friday morning.
The Kane County Health Department did not recommend that the school be closed, and it was cleaned while pupils were present, said school Community Relations Director Mike Chapin.
School officials are also talking to parents and staff about hygiene. They would not identify the student who had contracted the MRSA bacteria.
Schools in the Chicago suburbs of Evergreen Park, Aurora and Naperville reported several new confirmed cases of MRSA this week. Holy Angels Catholic School in Aurora closed Thursday for cleaning after officials learned of a case of the disease.
MRSA, short for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, can turn deadly if they enter the bloodstream or lead to necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-destroying infection.
