A car which a witness said was driving on the railroad tracks was struck by a Metra train early Tuesday evening in west suburban Downers Grove, leaving the driver hospitalized.
Police and firefighters remain on the scene of a car-train accident as of 6:50 p.m., according to Downers Grove Deputy Police Chief Jim Black.
Metra's Burlington Northern Sante Fe train No. 1243 was westbound from Chicago to Aurora when it was involved in the grade-crossing accident about 4:30 p.m., according to Metra spokesman Patrick Waldron.
Black said the accident occurred near the intersection of the tracks and Maple Avenue, but was actually about 250 feet east. "Witnesses saw the vehicle driving eastbound on the railroad tracks," when it was struck by a westbound train, he said.
The driver of the late-model Toyota car was a 29-year-old male who was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Black said. His condition was unknown.
Black said it was unclear why the car was traveling on the railroad tracks.
Train No. 1243 was due to arrive in Aurora at 4:56 p.m., but remained stopped at the site near the Fairview Avenue station, Waldron said.
Train No. 1276, scheduled to arrive at Union Station in Chicago at 5:27 p.m., remains stopped at the site of the crash and Train No. 1288, scheduled to depart from Aurora at 5:20 p.m. was canceled, according to Metra's web site. Other trains operating between Aurora and Chicago are delayed.
