A 17-year-old boy was sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty Friday to the Halloween 2005 murder of an Aurora woman who was missing for nearly two months before her body was discovered.
Gareng Deng pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree murder in exchange for the prison sentence, according to a release from the Kane County State's Attorney's office.
Deng was charged with the murder of Marilyn Bethell of Aurora in October 2005.
Bethell disappeared Oct. 31, 2005. Authorities believe Deng, then 14, entered her home in the 2500 block of Quail Court in Aurora without her permission and forced her to leave at gunpoint, the release said. Bethell was taken to a wooden area a few miles from her home and shot once in the head, execution style.
Her decomposed body was found Dec. 26, 2005, in a wooden area in unincorporated Batavia Township near Butterfield and Kirk roads.
"Mr. Deng, you have affected many lives by your actions. I hope you reflect on that over the next 35 years," Judge Allen Anderson said after he accepted the plea.
Based on Illinois law, Deng must serve 100 percent of the sentence. He was given credit for 793 days served at the Kane County Jail while awaiting trial.
