Empty Minivan Turns Up In Des Plaines River

No One Inside, No Injuries Reported

FRANKLIN PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― No injuries were reported when an unoccupied minivan was found submerged in the waters of the Des Plaines River in west suburban Franklin Park Monday morning.

Sometime shortly before 4:30 a.m., the Franklin Park Fire Department received a call reporting a vehicle was spotted in the river in the 3600 block of River Road, according to a firefighter.

A passerby called authorities when they saw the Chrysler minivan with its hazards flashing and without license plates submerged in 3-1/2 to 4-foot deep waters that had overflowed the bank of the Des Plaines River, police Sgt. Robert Wright said.

A special alarm was initiated and divers were sent to the scene, but no one was in the minivan and no injuries were reported, the firefighter said. The divers were able to wade to the vehicle and did not have to don their full dive gear, Wright said.

Police do not know who the minivan is registered to.

"At this point, it appears that someone may have pushed [the vehicle] in the water," Wright said.

The van had been pulled out of the river by 5:05 a.m., the firefighter said.

Franklin Park police will continue to investigate.
