Craig Stebic Allegedly Threatened Wife's Life
Lisa Stebic Was Last Seen April 30, 2007
PLAINFIELD, Ill. (CBS) ―
Court documents filed last week show threats Craig Stebic allegedly made against his wife, Lisa Stebic, in the months before she disappeared. They include an alleged threat that he "would cut Lisa Stebic into pieces and no one would ever find her."
CBS 2 West Suburban Bureau Chief Mike Puccinelli reports Craig Stebic is also accused of saying "Lisa Stebic's face would be on the back of a milk carton someday."
The documents are part of a case filed by Lisa Stebic's parents to try and force Craig Stebic to allow them to visit the couple's children.
Neighbor Lorrie Bingenheimer said she heard threats like that come from Craig Stebic before.
"We were talking in reference to another friend's divorce and Craig flat-out said, 'well you'll see my wife on a milk carton before she gets any of my money,'" Bingenheimer said.
Lisa Stebic's cousin Melanie Greenberg, the family's spokesperson, says no member of Lisa's immediate family has seen her children in six months.
"We're trying to make sure these children have seen a counselor," Greenberg said. "We're trying to make sure these children are OK."
As part of that process documents were filed meant to show that Craig Stebic's behavior toward his wife was not always acceptable, like in Christmas 2006 when Craig Stebic called police and refused to let his wife into the home. The documents state that he hold police that they "should arrest Lisa Stebic," and that if Lisa entered the home there would be trouble." And that "if the police came back they better bring reinforcements."
Greenberg is one of a handful of people to have seen the never-released police report from that night.
"He made all sorts of comments, like if she came back into the home he would knock her on her ass, that it would not be pretty," Greenberg said.
Bingenheimer said Craig Stebic's temper was short. She recalled one incident in which he lost it in front of the couple's children.
"He'd go, 'get out of here! Go to your room, grab a shovel, dig a hole; dig one for your mother while you're at it,'" Bingenheimer said. "That's what he would say."
Lisa Stebic was last seen April 30, 2007. She and her husband were going through a divorce but still living together in their Plainfield home.
