Husband Of Missing Plainfield Mom Wants Guns Back

Craig Stebic's Wife, Lisa Stebic, Has Been Missing For Nearly A Year

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Craig Stebic, the husband of missing Plainfield mother Lisa Stebic, has a court date next month to ask a judge to order police to give him two dozen guns they took from him last year.

As CBS 2's Katie McCall reports, Stebic is following in the footsteps of another high profile husband whose wife is also missing.

Craig Stebic wants his 24 guns -- most of them rifles and shotguns, and at least one 25 caliber handgun -- returned to the Plainfield home from which his wife vanished almost one year ago.

Stebic, who is a person of interest in his wife's disappearance, heads to court next month to ask a judge for the weapons as well as a pickup truck and a Saturn sedan.

Plainfield police seized the property in May 2007 as part of their investigation.

"We think those items may be connected to the cause of death of Lisa and without finding her body we don't know may be of value to us," said Plainfield Police Department Chief Don Bennett.

The department continues to focus on Stebic. The chief says he is, and has always been, uncooperative.

"He's the prime person we feel that knows the whereabouts of Lisa," Bennett said.

Craig Stebic is home but has asked CBS 2 to stay off his property. His attorney says the guns are his client's property and he deserves to have them back.

Last week, Bolingbrook police Sgt. Drew Peterson filed an almost identical motion in Will County for his guns. Peterson's wife, Stacy Peterson, has been missing since October and he is a suspect in her disappearance.

"It's not a surprise that Craig's attorney would do a motion to do the same thing," said her cousin Melanie Greenberg.

With the one-year anniversary of Lisa Stebic's disappearance coming up on April 30, her family is hoping for a break in the case.

"We'll never give up in trying to find her," Greenberg said.

The Will County State's Attorney is asking state police to take away Peterson's firearm owner's identification card, which would prevent Peterson from getting his guns back.

The state's attorney has not said whether he will make the same request in Stebic's case.

Stebic goes to court April 2.
