State Police Revoke Stebic's FOID Card
PLAINFIELD, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
State police revoked Craig Stebic's firearm owner's identification card Wednesday following a request from Plainfield police Chief Don Bennett.
"We feel it's in the best interest of the community, based on our investigation of the Lisa Stebic case," Bennett said. "We had the opportunity to view some conduct of Mr. Stebic and, based on numerous things, we felt that it was in our best interest to revoke his FOID card."
Bennet would not say what conduct police had observed.
Stebic was served a notice Wednesday night, telling him he had to turn his FOID card over to Plainfield police. He did so without incident.
Stebic's wife, Lisa, was reported missing May 1, 2007, after she was last seen at the couple's home. She and Stebic were divorcing at the time, and police have named Stebic a person of interest in her disappearance. He has not been charged with any crime. Lisa Stebic's parents and grandparents have taken Stebic to court in an attempt to gain visitation with Lisa's children. As part of that petition, they are seeking answers on several issues from Stebic, including whether he told Lisa he would cut her into pieces.
As part of the investigation into the disappearance, police seized a car, truck and 24 guns from the Stebic home. Stebic has been to court to try to get those items back. He has since gotten back the car, but Judge George Lenard ruled he cannot have the guns or truck back just yet. Both sides will appear before the judge again June 24.
His FOID card now revoked, Stebic can't legally own the guns even if the judge decided they should be returned to him.
Drew Peterson, of Bolingbrook, has been named a suspect in the disappearance of his wife, Stacy. He, too, had guns and other items seized by police investigating the case. While Peterson was pursuing the return of his property, state police revoked his FOID card, too. Now, Peterson can't have the guns back.
A judge ruled Thursday that most of the guns could be given to Peterson's adult son, Stephen.
It is unknown whether similar arrangements could be made with a Stebic relative should police release Stebic's guns.
"Mr. Stebic is under a lot of pressure during this ordeal," Bennett said. "Based on that and some other things I can't reveal, we felt it was in my best interest as police chief to protect the community the best we can."
Lisa Stebic's family declined to comment on the revocation of Stebic's FOID card, as did a man who answered the phone at Craig Stebic's home.
