Police Officer, Firefighter Hurt In Cicero Blaze

All Residents Displaced From Burned Apartment Building

CICERO, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A police officer and a firefighter were injured during a fire at a three-story apartment building that left about 50 residents residents displaced in west suburban Cicero on Thursday afternoon.

The Red Cross of Greater Chicago said 50 people, including 35 children, were affected by the blaze.

The fire started about 2:45 p.m., possibly in a dumpster, in the rear of the 24-unit brick building at 1930 Cicero Ave. and spread to the building, Cicero Fire Marshal George Gregory said Friday morning.

The blaze burned in two apartments and left all other units with smoke and water damage, he said.

A Cicero firefighter suffered a separated shoulder while battling the blaze and a Cicero police officer, who was first on the scene, suffered smoke inhalation while rescuing a tenant, town spokesman Eric Kohn said.

The police officer was taken to Oak Park Hospital, according to Kohn, who said a building tenant was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation but was not hospitalized.

Gregory said the firefighter was treated and released from Mount Sinai Hospital. All residents of the building were safely evacuated, Kohn said.

The fire was "contained" by 3:45 p.m., according to Kohn, though fire crews stayed on the scene well into the evening.

The Red Cross of Greater Chicago reported Friday morning that more than 50 people were affected, including 35 children. The Red Cross provided assistance to 24 families with food, clothing and infant supplies, spokeswoman Maria Corral said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation Friday but Gregory said there was no reason to suspect foul play.
