Prosecutors announced Thursday they will pursue the death penalty for Christopher Vaughn, who is accused of killing his wife and three children in the far southwest suburbs in June.
Vaughn said nothing as he was escorted Thursday afternoon from the courthouse into a van and back to jail. The bodies of the defendant's wife Kimberly Vaughn 34, and their three children Abigayle Elizabeth, 12; Cassandra Ellen, 11; Blake Philip, 8, were found on June 14 inside a red Ford Expedition that was parked on a secluded service road in Channahon Township.
Christopher Vaughn was arrested on June 23 at a funeral home in a St. Louis suburb, just hours before a memorial service for his family.
At the hearing Thursday, Will County State's Atty. James Glasgow announced he would pursue Vaughn's prosecution as a capital case.
"We took a little over three months of review internally in the office. I convened a capital punishment review committee made up of our senior trial attorneys in the office, and we reviewed the evidence and all the statutory factors and aggravation and mitigation," Glasgow said.
Vaughn's parents were also silent as they left the courthouse.
Christopher Vaughn is being held at the Will County detention center without bond.
