14 Shamed For Public Urination In Naperville
Police: Visit The Restroom Before Leaving
NAPERVILLE, Ill. (CBS) ―
A sense of relief turned tense this weekend for 14 visitors to Naperville's downtown restaurant and business district when they were cited by members of the Naperville Police Department for public urination.
They also had their names printed in the local newspaper.
The citations mostly took place Friday night into Saturday morning "in response to complaints from store owners about urine smell in alleys," Naperville police Cmdr. Dave Hoffman said Wednesday. All those cited will receive a mandatory court date.
Twelve were cited around the main parking deck at 75 E. Chicago near Washington Street. Two others were cited around businesses in the shopping complex at 22 E. Chicago, which is across the street from the parking deck, as well as at 218 S. Washington.
Public urination "is an ongoing problem (in the downtown area), though it depends on how many people are in the area around the downtown bars," Hoffman said.
A similar enforcement took place around this time last year, Hoffman said, and it nailed about the same number of people.
"We like people to practice common sense and plan according to their needs," Hoffman said, indicating patrons to downtown bars and restaurants are encouraged to use the washroom before leaving so they do not feel the need to relieve themselves on their way to their car.
The people cited ranged in age from 22 to 36 years old. Two of those who just couldn't wait to get to an indoor restroom were women. The Naperville Sun listed the names of all the offenders.
