Die-hard Chicago Cubs fans can now go to their graves at the friendly confines sort of.
Dennis Mascari is die-hard Cubs fan, and in a grassy field here he's building a cremation arena, recreating the ivy-covered outfield wall at Wrigley Field that he calls Beyond the Vines.
"Why not enjoy the Cubs in the afterlife? Why only now?" Mascari said.
Think of it the Victorian gravestones at Bohemian Cemetery might be the perfect backdrop to grant a dying Cubs fan's last request.
The 24-by-12 foot structure will have room for 240 urns, each detailed in Cubbie blue and sporting the team's logo.
The structure will do its best to mimic Wrigley's bleacher wall, covered in real ivy and anchored by a 7-foot replica of the team's scoreboard.
"The scoreboard will all be done in beautiful stained glass," Mascari said. "It will be just a beautiful showpiece."
The ashes of super Cubs fan and musician Steve Goodman were spread over home plate. In fact, the Cubs admit they get a large number of requests to bury the ashes of fans at the friendly confines requests that are granted on a limited basis.
"I want to make it a joyful thing to visit your loved one not one that's gloomy or depressing," Mascari said.
And just in case you doubt if he's a believer, Mascari reminds us he's cried Cubbie blue.
"I was there when they lost in the playoffs in San Diego and my son had to watch me crying in the parking lot," he said.
Beyond the Vines will be complete by fall and placement packages begin at $1,500. And for $5,000, you can have a ceremony while sitting in six retired box seats from Wrigley with vintage play-by-play piped in.
