Director of City Food Tours, Eric Matzke Conducts Group Tasting
You've heard the saying, "You are what you eat." Well, according to Philadelphia's City Food Tours Director, Eric Matzke that includes your sex life.
"When you improve your nutrition, you feel healthier. You can get in shape a little a bit and you feel better about yourself," said Matzke. "That allows you to let your inhibition down; and when you feel sexier, you're more in the mood."
Matzke and his partner, Robert Weinberg, utilized this idea as the frame work during their special presentation on Aphrodisiacs Wednesday at 'The Stratum' in University City. The seductive yet light-hearted tasting adventure included exploration of gastronomic traditions, food sampling and a look at the sexy science that gets you in the mood.
The word aphrodisiac, which comes from Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, sex and beauty, can be defined as an agent, which is used to increase sexual desire.
So, what foods give you a boost in the bedroom?
Matzke says onions, garlic, tomatoes and caviar are foods that get you in the mood. He also pointed to expensive spices like saphron. "We like when people spend money on us, so spices really come into play there."
Phallic foods like bananas and asparagus made the cut because of their shape, while peppers topped the list for their ability to make you sweat.
Matzke said, "Sweat is important because it allows us to release pheromones and those pheromones can be picked up by your partner and actually make them a little more attracted to you."
Avocado, which Matzke referred to as a "testicle tree," gets its aphrodisiac power from its healthy fat content, which some say helps to get the juices flowing.
Finally, Matzke has good news for chocolate lovers. "Chocolate is a fantastic aphrodisiac because it releases love chemicals inside of it and that actually allows the release of endorphins, which are associated with feelings of happiness and ecstasy."
Science has yet to prove the effectiveness of so-called aphrodisiacs, an obstacle Matzke attributes to the human psyche.
"The biggest thing that gets in the way of research is that the biggest sex organ we have is between our ears, it's our brain," said Matzke. You are combating so many subliminal messages and this placebo effect. It's hard to get to the real science behind it."
Still, that cannot keep us from trying. After all, if the solution to our sex problems can be solved through chocolate, I'm all for moving forward in good faith.
