Cops, Victim Nab Robber In West Rogers Park
Woman Mugged At ATM On Devon Avenue
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A man who allegedly held a corkscrew to a woman's neck during a robbery was nabbed after the victim, her companion and two police officers chased and caught him in the North Side Rogers Park neighborhood on Wednesday morning.
Later Wednesday, a Cook County judge set bond for Carlos Ramos at $750,000, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin said.
Ramos, 28, of the 6400 block of North Fairfield Avenue, is charged with one count each of armed robbery and aggravated battery, police said. His next court date is June 16 for a preliminary hearing in North Felony Court (Br. 42) at 2452 W. Belmont Ave, Conklin said.
About 11 p.m. Tuesday, Sunna Noormohammed, 19, entered the lobby of a Bank of America branch at 2545 W. Devon Ave. and saw a man -- allegedly Ramos -- near the ATM, according to Rogers Park District police Lt. John Franklin.
Ramos allegedly told her he was having trouble with the ATM, but she should go ahead and use the machine.
"This is a common trick," Franklin said.
She attempted to deposit $600, but Ramos allegedly pulled out a wine corkscrew and said, "Give me the money now. I'm not kidding. I'll slit your throat," the lieutenant said.
She gave him the money and he "took off," but she chased him. Her male companion, 18-year-old Shahbaz Hussain, who was in a car waiting, also began chasing him on foot, according to Franklin.
Rogers Park District Officers Kenneth Meerbrey and Panyathip Sisavath were inside a passing police wagon when they saw the chase and asked what was going on. The pursuers replied, "He just robbed me" and Meerbrey and Sisavath "jumped out and chased the guy too," Franklin said.
Ramos allegedly slashed the corkscrew at Hussain -- who suffered a small cut on his right palm -- and Meerbrey and Sisavath captured him at 2610 W. Devon Ave., police said.
Franklin said the corkscrew and $600 were recovered.
The lieutenant said the arrestee allegedly made a "full admission," saying he was having trouble paying his rent.
Franklin said Meerbrey and Sisavath will be recommended for department commendations.
