Alcohol found in car that killed woman, toddler in Tri-State crash
WADSWORTH, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Open alcohol was found inside a car following a two-car head-on crash Friday night on the Tri-State Tollway near north suburban Wadsworth that severely injured a child and killed a Wisconsin mother and her 16-month-old son.
Nicole Polk, 24, of Algoma, Wis., and her son Tevin Temple were killed in the crash, according to Lake County Coroner Richard Keller.
A Sunday autopsy determined both died from multiple trauma, and toxicology results for Polk would be available Monday, Keller said.
The crash happened on the Tri-State Tollway (I-94) near Russell Road in Wadsworth about 11 p.m., according to Illinois State Police Tollway District Master Sgt. Susan Ewald.
Polk was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier south when she crossed over a grassy area near a median and struck a 2004 Toyota Camry driven by a 20-year-old woman, Ewald said.
Polk and her son Tevin, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Keller. Polk's other child, a 2 1/2-year-old boy, was severely injured in the crash and taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ewald said.
The driver of the Camry and three passengers were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries and were treated and released, Ewald said.
Ewald said open alcohol was found inside Polk's car.
The crash forced State Police to shut down all northbound lanes from 11 p.m. to 3:50 a.m., and divert all northbound traffic off the tollway onto West Russell Road. Southbound lanes of the tollway were not affected in the crash.
Illinois State Police are investigating.
