Viewer Comments On Economic Concerns

We asked what your concerns are about the economy. Here are your responses.

THE CONCERN I HAVE WITH THE ECONOMY IS THAT IN 1929 PEOPLE WERE JUMPING FROM WINDOWS AND LEAPING TO THEIR DEATHS WILL WE SEE A REPEAT OF THIS OR A MORE HORRIFIC TIMES --Michael G

The economy started going bad when we started outsourcing our jobs to other countries like India, Korea, Twain, and China. The jobs that were not outsourced are being overrun with illegal aliens. In addition to that companies cry that there is not enough technical skilled people so the open the doors to L1B and H1B individuals. So with all the job loss its no wonder that legal Americans are losing their homes to repossession and the banks are failing. Add to that the corporate greed by the corporate leaders raking in millions of dollars and increasing their take by pulling shenanigans and one can see why companies like Enron failed. We spend billions baling out failed companies and fund the military yet to fail miserably to aid its own citizens. I for one made more in 2002 than I can now. In fact I am making what I was making in 1982 wages. Lastly we worry about the war on terrorism yet by outsourcing everything we do foreign counties with one yank of the string can devastate our county without firing a shot. Think about it the making of defective armor, defective computer chips, even the turning over the remote operation of out computers to overseas individuals. Just think a few keystrokes on a computer that we gave the keys to could stop the banking industry, halt stock trading, and even disrupt our transportation and power grid. Making more profit (greed) will eventually lead to the down fall of the country and it is already happening. --Walter Miller

1. That attempts to bail out large banks and investment firms will fail because we can't be sure even now if any one is holding the managers to the kind of standards that will make a difference. 2. That directors of failed financial organizations will be let off the hook and rewarded for their failure rather than dismissed with no severance, pension or golden parachute like the thousands of people whose investments they have squandered. --Frank Madsen

The economy is so far in the toilet that I am sure McCain can't fix it, and I assume Obama can do some to help, but this is something that our nation will face for a long time coming. --Mike

Stop outsourcing all our jobs overseas. We have no jobs left for Americans! Congress gives money to these companies who take jobs away from us. This stinks and the economy suffers big time. --Jane Krol

McCain & the Keating 5 preceded the 1987 S/Market Crash of Oct 19,1987, McCain sits on Commerce Committe in Senate & help deregulate Banks, S&Ls, Ins Co that have led to this recent S/Market Crash. McCain is going to fix?? He is the cause!! The only thing McCain received in 1987 Keating 5 was that he used POOR JUDGEMENT> --Norman Kuhman

I worry that my taxes will be raised to prop up federal spending and welfare programs.I am concerned that gas prices will not lower and it will be too costly to drive. --Georgia Donbrowski

It's not coincidence that the 1929 Great Depression, the 1980s Savings & Loan scandal, and the current financial fiasco all occurred during Republican administrations. Republican philosophy of unfettered capitalism, unregulated business leads to unbridled avarice among business/financial leaders and exploitation of the people. We need a Democratic win in November just as we did in 1932. We can't AFFORD another Republican administration! Why isn't anyone charging McCain with "flip-flopping" for his flip-flop stance on [de]regulation of business. He'd rather win an election than do what's right for the people. --Jean Alberti

My concern is everyone pointing the finger at the Republican administration for the problems with our economy. The availability of zero-down home loans for people who can't afford a home to begin with started with the Clinton administration, therefore, Bush administration is not soley responsible. Both the Democrat and Republican congress needs to be held accountable. --Penny

The best social program is a good job. Bill Clinton 2004. It seems that more Americans can use a social program as such. Use your vote wisely Obama 08. Chicago, IL --MC

My concern is that the goverment will step in and keep bailing people out. I have been a responsible adult with only a high school education. But I could see this coming quite a few years ago. I hope that the goverment will just let it play out and that's all I have to say about that. --Tim

Sen Obama has received the 2nd Largest amount of Lobbyist contributions among all members of Congress from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. How can we be sure he will actually enact the reforms he promises? --Marian Patricoski

Being on disability and those on Social Security, the ever rising costs of utilities and groceries make it difficult to make ends meet especially with the high cost of prescriptions and no help. Credit cards have to be used, which incur finance charges, when the monthly income is exhausted. This recently happened to us when our refrigerator went out, and now the flooding of our basement. It's a circle with no end and something has to be done for all. --David and Sandra Rentfro

I find that everyone is being taxed to death due to mis-management by our city government, hired truck scandal etc. Also the gas prices jumped 40 cents when we started getting the rain and in one day it has gone down 20 cents. Why are the gas stations allowed to price gouge? We are all in trouble and the economy can't be fixed by taxing us to death and jobs not giving raises to keep up with the economy. --Christine Foss

When the Fed agrees to bail out companies, in addition to using my hard earned dollars, I believe that the CEO's and board members should be made to return all their pay and bonuses they received for approximately the past 3 since it is their greed that helped cause the problem. They are the ones that permitted people to get mortgages that did not have the financial means to pay for those mortgages. I don't believe that every person in the US is entitled to own home. It should be earned! --Stefanie Hampton

My main concern is who can put the best team together to tackle the problem. I think John McCain shouldn't be given an easy ride on this since he has given us many warning signs that he is just out of touch with the reality of the situation... first stating that he does not know much about the economy and then recently making his statement about the fundamentals of the economy being strong. Both times he has had to come back from gaffs to change, though he states it is clarifying his statements. I truly think Senator Obama will be more nimble and react more astutely on this issue. --Bernard Aguirre

For the past 40 years, America has chased inflation by raising wages, prices and subsequently taxes. Yet few, if any persons or entities have truly caught up with it. I believe today's economic problems are a case of all the barnyard animals coming home-at the same time! --Jon K. Evans

We (Americans) are broke because of Iraq, and huge tax cuts. I live paycheck to paycheck, my wife and I earn about 80K, but have not seen our taxes go down. If we had more we would save some and spend some. But the spending threshold of the most wealth is a fixed amount tax cut or not. Companies are not investing in themselves, they are cutting jobs, so their tax cuts only go into their pockets. --Richard

As a struggling college student, my biggest concern is how I can survive all of this. I lost my waitressing job after the restaurant I worked for went under due to the poor economy, and now, with everyone looking for extra jobs in order to make their ends meets, I'm not only fighting applications from other college students for part-time jobs, but also people who already hold a full-time job. I've been having to borrow from my student loan in order to get groceries and pay rent, but I really don't like paying interest on my life. This is a very hard time for myself any other college students who must work in order to survive. I just hope that it gets better soon, or else I'm not sure what I will do. --Brittany

Maybe it it time to allow the "free market" to determine it's own level and not have our tax dollars getting absorbed by greedy CEOs and the almighty egos of same. We are retired and would wish the best for those involved with our banking/financial sector, but their greed has put everyone in harms way. Having said that, it is best to let the chips fall as they may. --Thomas Adams

It won't matter who gets elected as president. Real change must take through the actions of Congress. The problem is that the influence of special interests is so powerfull, there is little likelyhood that any change will in fact take place. The Congress is controlled by big business interests through lobbyists. --Joe Martinek

My concerns have become a reality. Though I'm sure I can't feel the way my mother did during the depression, I only fear I will. --Dianne Glashagel

If you are an informed voter, read the two tax plans, they are as simple as night and day. I have scrimped and saved for our retirement for over 35 years. Obama's plan would tax my retirement nest egg to the point where I will have to work until I'm 80! He also wants to raise the tax on the sale of my house (assuming I can ever afford to sell it!) I can't afford Obama. --Michael Johl

My concerns are everything with the economy..without businesses, there are no jobs.We have to stop sending our jobs everywhere but the US. People losing theirs home.let these people make smaller payments..something is better than nothing. Whom ever becomes President has their hands full..too many priorities..which one will come first --Patricia

With everything going on we need to have someone that can work with both Rep. and Dem.and come up with best solution for the country. We need someone that has done this before and has the experience, which I feel is John McCain. He has the recored of working with both parties. Right now I don't think either canidate can really say what they are going to do to clean up this mess. If all the econimist didn't see this coming and didn't know how to stop it how can anybody know. They are going to have to sit down and look at what all transpired and work will all parties to get a solution. --Rebecca

We should just get over it - we're just a bunch of whinners (LOL!) --J. Philmlee

Chuck Baldwin for president....It's time for him to be heard. Fight for equal air time for him. He needs to be heard. Let's fight together to hear the "Truth in politics" This may be our only chance. --Danielle Harmening

We keep saving companies that are so big that we can't afford to let them fail. But how are they being saved? Bank of America has acquired Countrywide, the country's largest mortgage lender and now Lehman. Heaven help us when Bank of America fails! Once we unwind this mess, we need to bring back the Glass Stegal Act to re-regulate banking. --Paul Chouinard

We are on a downward spin, with the off shoring of jobs in many industries. Our dollar is shrinking and government is totally not in touch with the people as well as being corrupt. We toot our whistle and tell other countries how corrupt and disfunctional they are, we should wake up and look at ourselves.Greed has driven the economy to where we are now. I think we have lost mant things as a country the most respect from others that we once had. --Gary

My concern is that McCain and Obama have no idea what is really wrong with our economy! --Jerry Koehler

I'm sick and tired of the Goverment giving out Billions of dollars to banks and investment compines when their CEO's are paid millions of dollars .. Im very worried what will happen next...  --Rich

Governement bailouts are going to crush the economy. The taxpayers can not foot a 2 1/2 billion dollar bill. Families are struggling, small business is on the brink of failure. Should I sign my business up to get bailed out and keep my assets? --Jim McGuire

My biggest concern is that our paychecks are staying the same while the cost of gas, utilities and food are soaring. How long is the working middle class going to last like this? --Kim Heavilin

Neither of the candidates has said what he'd do to end long-term unemployment. The topics being publicly discussed now are for people who still have jobs, savings, etc. I'm already broke and hidden homeless. We long-term unemployed Americans are always spoken of in the third person, as if we are just numbers - rather than real people who are actually unfunded producers. When will you ask the candidates our question? --Jean SmilingCoyote

Everyday people not feeling financially secure. --Maria

It'd be nice to see my tax dollar's bailing out the middle class home owners who are victims of the predatory lenders' greed. Corporations should learn from their mistakes just like everyone else. --Lonnie Phillips

That those of us who work hard and save will end up worse off than anyone else because the govt is too busy helping those who are careless and/or stupid. --Pat T.
