Married Veteran Duo Honored For Helping Community

Both Served In World War II And Continue To Help Other Veterans

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Every month, Illinois honors a different veteran – someone who did even more than defend the nation, someone who also contributed to their community.

But as CBS 2's Rob Johnson reports, this month the state honored two veterans, a husband and wife duo.

First came their selfless sacrifice in the U.S. military, then years of helping veterans after their service.

That's why Michael and Lorain Kuryla are both being recognized as veterans of the month.

Michael Kuryla fought in World War II on board the U.S.S. Indianapolis. When the ship was destroyed he was lost at seas for four days in shark-infested water.

"I wear this cap all the time, and I wear it in their honor, for the 880 that died," Michael Kuryla said, referring to his U.S.S. Indianapolis cap. "But I… it's very hard. You never forget what happened."

Lorain Kuryla also fought in World War II. Decades later, at the age of 63, she served in the first Iraq war where she earned the nickname "Grambo."

"I missed the military. I still do," she said. "I just like the parameters that are set for you when you're in the military."

Since returning to civilian life, they've traveled the country telling the story of the Indianapolis and visiting hospitalized veterans.

The reason for their decades of devotion is simple: gratitude.

"I just felt that Uncle Sam had treated me so well for so many years, and it was payback time

The Kurylas' son, the Hillside fire chief, nominated them for veterans of the month. The award was a surprise for the couple; they were told their son was being honored.
