UPS Truck Crash Closes I-65
JASPER CTY., Ind. (Post-Tribune) ―
A crash involving a UPS semi truck and a car closed northbound I-65 traffic for more than two hours early Friday.
According to a release from Indiana State Police, Cleveland Gardner, 43, of Glenwood, was driving the double-trailer UPS truck when he felt his rear trailer begin to fishtail. As he tried to gain control, the rear trailer went off the road and hit the guard rail.
The incident occurred just south of Rensselaer, Ind., about 35 miles south of Merrillville.
The semi began to swing around when it crossed over into the left lane, hitting a 2004 Saturn driven by Nenita Miller, 58, of DeMotte, Ind., the release said.
The Saturn then spun off the roadway, hitting the guard rail on the outer shoulder, before it crossed back across both lanes of I-65 and hit the guard rail off the inner shoulder, according to police.
The UPS truck spun completely around and hit the guard rail off the inner shoulder, police said. The rear trailer then rolled over, splitting open and spilling packages.
The UPS rig and front trailer then jack-knifed across both lanes of northbound I-65, blocking it. One lane of traffic was re-opened at 5:35 a.m.
Miller was taken to Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer with complaints of pain to her body.
Gardner was not injured, but was cited for unsafe lane movement.
