2 Males Fatally Shot on West Side
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
A man and teenage boy were fatally shot in the Austin neighborhood about 5 p.m. Saturday.
The victims, Steven Nelson, 16, of 133 N. Menard Ave., and James Brandon, 27, of 1650 N. 1st Ave. in Melrose Park, were found at 54 N. Lotus Ave. and 5449 W. Washington Blvd., but were part of a single shooting, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
The man was shot in the head and the boy was shot in the chest. Now neighbors are asking for increased police protection in the area.
Both victims were standing on the sidewalk when a gunman approached them in a passing car.
Bill Stamer lives a block away from the scene and witnessed the incident.
"They drove up, opened fire and then it turned into total chaos--everybody running and screaming," he said. "A couple of people ran and tried to help the kids and there was obviously nothing they could do at that point."
Stamer says the area has been plagued with gang violence this summer.
"I've been over here a month and this is the sixth or seventh incident of this nature," he said.
It's a concern echoed by Monique Allgood, Brandon's cousin. She says a police surveillance camera on the block was recently removed for some reason.
"Now all of a sudden, the cameras gone and now my cousin is dead, so they can't even pick this up and trace it," she said. "But we have the mayor out there saying if you have two parking tickets unpaid you get a boot on your car? What is he doing with the community?"
The shooter was unknown as of 8 p.m. Saturday. Autopsies are scheduled for Sunday.
Grand Central Area detectives are investigating.
