Commode In Yard Causes Commotion In Lakemoor

LAKEMOOR, Ill. (CBS) ― A neighborhood feud is simmering in Lakemoor over what one family is using instead of flower pots in their front yard.

As CBS 2's Anne State reports, now the village is getting involved.

The front yard of Tina Asmus' house is unique. There's a toilet with a plant growing out of the bowl. It says "Have a nice day." There's a sink with mulch and flowers. And there's another toilet.

Tina says her kids helped her with the planting. She says people take life too seriously. The toilets are meant to be funny.

"I love them, I think they're great," she said. "But this is getting ridiculous."

It quickly became apparent to us that neighbors are divided over Tina's toilets.

"It's your prerogative," one neighbor said. "Personally -- my opinion, I've never given it to you -- I don't think they belong."

"This is what she likes and I don't see anything wrong," someone else said.

But the village of Lakemoor does. Tina was cited for violating an ordinance that basically says you can't store something in your yard which is no longer used for the purpose it was made for.

"If you drive in Lakemoor, there are people that have old wagon wheels," Tina said. "If I'm in violation, so are they."

In fact, not far away, another resident is growing plants out of two big tires.

But newly elected Village President Todd Weihofen told us the village is now enforcing ordinances, like the one he says Tina is violating.

She says it's wrong.

"I have the right as long as I'm living decently to have what I want," she said.

The village president says 90 of Tina's neighbors signed a petition, in favor of code enforcement. Tina says she didn't sign it, and that's when the complaints started. She feels it has gotten personal.
