Three Arts Club May Become Mausloeum For Cremains

Gold Coast Landmark Has Been Vacant Since 2003

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A developer is looking to turn part of the vacant Three Arts Club in the Gold Coast into a columberium -- a mausoleum to house cremains.

A spot for your loved one's urn would cost anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 at the building, located at 1300 N. Dearborn Pkwy.

The developer was trying to build a boutique hotel at the building, but the deal fell through.

The mausoleum plan would have to be approved by the City Council.

The Three Arts Club was constructed in 1914 as a dormitory for women studying the fine arts. It was designed by the famed Chicago architectural firm Holabird & Roche, and was declared a Chicago landmark in 1981.

The building features 110 units around a central courtyard, and a Byzantine-style entrance featuring mosaics representing the arts of music, drama and painting. It has been vacant since 2003, when the last residents moved out.
