Suspect Charged In 4 Robberies That Netted Only $2

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A strong-armed robbery suspect wearing a bright orange coat -- which helped police nab him -- was charged Wednesday with four separate Tuesday night attacks in the North Side Rogers Park neighborhood, police said.

Michael Kleinberg, 37, of 6175 N. Winchester Ave., was charged with aggravated robbery and three counts of robbery. All four charges are felonies, according to police, who said the charges were approved Wednesday morning.

The robberies occurred Tuesday night in the same general area, 1310 W. Lunt Ave., 6700 N. Glenwood Ave., 6647 N. Newgard Ave. and 7020 N. Ashland Ave., Rogers Park District police Lt. John Franklin said.

After all four robberies, Kleinberg only got away with $2. All victims positively identified him in part by the "bright orange coat" he was wearing, Franklin said.

Prior to his arrest, a man flagged down officers and described the suspect as a person who followed his wife up to her door and tried to steal her purse. She was able to get inside and tell her husband, Franklin said.

Officers saw a man matching his description, and saw him flee and jump a fence. Officers gave chase and arrested him in the 1500 block of West Lunt Avenue at 10:51 p.m. Tuesday, Franklin said.

No one was injured during any of the attacks, and a gun was not displayed, the lieutenant said.

While in custody early Wednesday, officers saw him swallowing a large amount of drugs while at the Rogers Park District police station and he was hospitalized, according to Franklin, who said officers were keeping a close watch on him early Thursday.

Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
