Stranger Helps Amputee Whose Van Was Stolen
Wensdae Williams Will Be Able To Get Around Once Again Thanks To Generous Car Dealership Owner
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
A North Side resident who uses a wheelchair can get around again thanks to the generosity of a stranger.
CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports a thief stole Wensdae Williams' specially equipped van from its parking spot outside her Lakeview apartment building. But the owner of Star Nissan, Mike Berman, gave her the gift of a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, allowing Williams to once again travel independently.
"It was kind of a spur of the moment idea," Berman said. "I've been pretty blessed."
Berman said last week's coverage of Williams' plight caught his eye. A recent amputee, Williams took action after her van was stolen, putting up signs in hopes of shaming the thief into returning her wheels.
"I just didn't want to let this person win," Williams said.
Police still haven't found the van, but thanks to Berman, it's Williams who won.
"I can go back to living my everyday lifestyle, like I did before," Williams said. "I can go to doctors, therapy, the grocery store, the simple things."
And Berman's generosity didn't end with a car. He was so impressed with Williams' determination and upbeat personality that he's also offered her a job in Internet sales.
"I thought she'd be a good fit," Berman said.
"I want to go back to work, that was the whole purpose of having my leg amputated was to get back into life and not lay in bed and be in pain like I have been. I'm so excited," Williams said.
Berman said he's repaying some of his blessings. He owns three car dealerships and his wife and son have recovered from serious illnesses.
He has some great employees, too. His staff at Star Nissan passed the hat to give Williams $1,000 worth of gas.
