Man Charged In St. Charles Squeegee Attack

Roger Alder Attacked Gas Station Clerk For Sending Him To Wrong Bathroom, Being An 'Idiot'

ST. CHARLES, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Robert Alder allegedly gave two reasons for hitting a gas station clerk with a squeegee early Sunday morning.

First, the clerk sent him to the "wrong bathroom" at a gas station on East Main Street in St. Charles. Second, 24-year-old Alder announced the employee "was an idiot," according to a St. Charles police report.

Alder, of St. Charles, was charged with felony aggravated battery after the incident that unfolded about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Since Alder also fled when police arrived -- and struggled with two officers who suffered minor injuries -- he earned a second felony charge of resisting a peace officer.

According to police, Alder and two other people bought items from the gas station, then spent time in the parking lot afterward. When Alder's companions left, he grabbed the squeegee and headed back inside where he hit the clerk in the head in objection to the bathroom situation, police said.

The clerk called police and kept Alder inside by holding the store's doors shut until officers arrived, police said. During the wait, Alder broke the squeegee while hitting the door trying to get out, police said.

Alder refused to come out when officer showed up, then took off through a rear door, police said. Alder was caught on nearby Industrial Drive and was handcuffed after scuffling with two officers, police said. One officer took an elbow to the mouth, while the other reported a finger injury, police said.

Alder came away from the struggle worse for the wear, sporting scrapes to the right side of his face. And for breaking the $10 squeegee, Alder also was charged with misdemeanor criminal damage to property.

Free on bond, Alder is scheduled for a July 17 hearing in Kane County court.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the attack, police said.
