Police Question 2 People About 13-Year-Old's Death
CHICAGO (STNG) ―
Police are questioning two people Saturday after an autopsy revealed the cause of a 13-year-old South Side girl's death was child abuse.
Shavon Miles, of 7239 S. Maplewood Ave., was pronounced dead at Holy Cross Hospital at 3:34 p.m. Friday, according to a Cook County Medical Examiner's office spokesman.
An autopsy by the medical examiner's office stated Miles died from multiple injuries caused by child abuse. Her death was ruled a homicide.
Wentworth Area Sgt. Duffin said detectives are questioning two people in connection with the girl's death as of 6 p.m. Saturday. He said one of the two people being questioned was related to the girl.
Police responded about 3:30 p.m. to the South Side residence, police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor said. Upon arrival the child's mother said her daughter fell and struck her head.
Taylor said the girl had a history of medical problems. A medical examiner's office spokesman said the girl suffered from seizures.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the death. Jimmy Whitlow, a DCFS spokesman, said the agency has had prior contact with the family.
