House Rejects Ban On Smoking With Kids In Car
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) ―
The Illinois House soundly defeated a measure today that would have prohibited smoking in cars carrying children.
Legislation sponsored by Democratic Representative Mike Boland of East Moline got just 18 "yes" votes and 91 "no."
The bill, HB1769, would have allowed police to ticket motorists who light up when carrying a child eight or younger.
Boland says it would send a message about the dangers of second-hand smoke.
Republican Representative Bill Black of Danville says he wishes no one smoked. But he says banning smoking in cars would be a government invasion of privacy.
Anti-smoking groups took no position on the bill. They are focused on other legislative measures to ban public smoking statewide.
