Seatless 'L' Train Cars Coming This Fall

Ridership Up On CTA Due To Fuel Prices

CHICAGO (STNG) ― Riders on rush-hour CTA trains can expect to see seatless cars in late October or early November, according to CTA President Ron Huberman.

Huberman said earlier this summer that the CTA would start using seatless cars to deal with overcrowding.

There will be two seatless cars on each eight-car rush-hour train, so riders who need to sit down can choose a car with seats.

Huberman said CTA engineers are working on the cars to make sure that passengers in standing-room only cars have something to hang onto and a way to evacuate safely.

High fuel prices have driven up ridership on the CTA.

Ridership was up about 8 percent in July and 9 percent in August.

Huberman said the CTA would like to add rail cars to deal with overcrowding but is still waiting for a capital bill from Springfield.
