2 Men Rescued From Round Lake

ROUND LAKE, Ill. (Lake County News-Sun) ― Two men attempting to walk across Round Lake fell through the icy surface Saturday afternoon.

About 4 p.m., two men attempting to cross the northeast corner of Round Lake fell through the ice between East Lane Court and Cedar Avenue, Round Lake Fire Department Capt. Tony Carraro said.

The lake, which was iced over from the winter, thawed after some warmer temperatures hit the area this past week, Carraro said.

Fire crews from Round Lake, Grayslake and Fox Lake rescued the men from the icy water, Carraro said. The men were in the water at the surface for about 30 minutes.

Crews pulled the men from the water and brought them to shore using an airboat, traditionally used in swampy waters.

"We use the airboat for ice rescues," Carraro said.

The men were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in an unknown condition, Carraro said. Neither men were completely submerged in the water, but were being treated for exposure to the icy water.

This is the second incident stemming from melting ice in the northern suburbs in as many days. On Friday, a motorcyclist who tried to go for a ride on the ice of Gages Lake went into the water, prompting a rescue call to the Grayslake Fire Department.

A department spokesman said crews responding to the 5 p.m. call arrived to find that the cyclist had extricated himself from the water and, after a well-being check, was not transported for treatment.
