Will Chicago lose yet another important trade show?
The Chicago Tribune reported Thursday that the National Restaurant Association is trying to decide whether to take its 2012 show somewhere else, quoting a "source close to the negotations."
A subsequent report in the Chicago Sun-Times quoted a Restaurant Association official is saying the group has no plans to move the convention. But the official said the high costs at McCormick Place are worrisome.
The Restaurant Association has been holding its convention in Chicago for more than 50 years, the Tribune reported.
The city lost the International Plastics Exposition earlier this week. After holding its convention in Chicago since 1971, the plastics show is moving to Orlando, Fla., where convention officials say the cost of putting on a convention is much lower.
Last week,
the city lost Healthcare Information and Management Systems annual meeting, which was at McCormick Place for the first time this year. The group balked when the services of unionized electricians cost them $240,000, and will be in Las Vegas next time.
Lawmakers, leaders from the labor and hospitality industry, and the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority met Wednesday to begin reviewing all aspects of doing convention business in Chicago.
