Woman Struck, Killed By Red Line Train
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A 35-year-old woman was struck and killed by a CTA Red Line train Tuesday on the North Side.
The woman was struck by a train at the Argyle station, 1118 W. Argyle St., according to police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor.
Following the incident, about 5 p.m., power was shut off to the Red Line between the Thorndale and Wilson stops, according to CTA spokeswoman Wanda Taylor. This affected Red and Purple line service in both directions, she said. Customers heading north from downtown during the Tuesday rush period reported backups as far south as Chicago Avenue.
Friehiwet Tahir, of 5024 N. Ridgeway Ave., died, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
Northbound Red Line trains were stopping at Addison and shuttle buses were taking passengers between the Addison and Granville stations, making stops at the Red Line stations between those two stops, Taylor said.
Power was back to the Red Line tracks by 5:50 p.m., Taylor said.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
