Pregnant Woman Shot in Head on Far South Side
Mom-to-be in Critical Condition
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A 19-year-old pregnant woman remained in critical condition Saturday after she was shot in the back of the head while driving in the East Chicago neighborhood Friday night.
The woman was shot while driving with her 20-year-old boyfriend near East 104th Street and South Avenue L about 7:25 p.m., according to police News Affairs Officer Gabrielle Lesniak.
The two were in the vehicle when they heard shots fired and the woman's boyfriend, who was in the passenger seat, realized she had been shot, Lesniak said. He was able to stop the car, switch places with her and take her to Advocate Trinity Hospital.
The 19-year-old woman, who is pregnant, had been shot in the back of her head and was transferred from Trinity to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for further treatment, according to South Chicago District police.
The boyfriend told police the shots were fired by someone on foot, but could not provide further details.
No one was in custody for the shooting Saturday morning, and the woman remained in critical condition at Christ Hospital. Information about the condition of her unborn child was not available.
A motive in the incident was not known, and Lesniak said it was unclear whether the woman or her boyfriend were the intended targets.
Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
