Port-A-Potty Detonated At Diversey Harbor

Police: Incident Was Likely A Prank

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A suspected group of pranksters took the concept of the stink bomb to a whole new level early Friday when they used fireworks to blow up a portable toilet at Diversey Harbor.

Concerned citizens notified police of the explosion after hearing loud noises and a series of car alarms going off in the 2800 block of North Lake Shore Drive about 3 a.m., according to police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.

A "Port-A-Potty" was damaged by some kind of "unknown explosive device," Perez said. There were no reports of injuries and only the portable toilet was damaged following the explosion.

A Town Hall District lieutenant said the explosion was believed to have been caused by some type of fireworks and said the incident appeared to have been a prank.

The police Bomb and Arson Section was notified of the explosion Friday morning and remained at the scene investigating.

Police were investigating the incident as criminal damage to property but did not have an offender in custody Friday morning.
