Phones, Internet Down At Police HQ For 3+ Hours

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A glitch in a computer control room left Chicago Police Headquarters without phone or Internet access for several hours Saturday afternoon.

Previous reports said there was a small fire in the room, but Fire Media Affairs Dir. Larry Langford said crews found no burned cables or any indication of a fire.

Crews responded at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday after an automatic extinguisher from the computer glitch alerted fire officials to police headquarters at 3510 S. Michigan Ave., Langford said.

Three trucks reportedly responded to the scene, according to a police source. Langford said fire crews were on the scene for about 20 minutes.

Police spokesman Roderick Drew said officers on the street were not affected by the outage and "critical units" in the building were using cell phones and BlackBerry devices to stay in touch with the 911 dispatch center.

The phones and computers came back up about 3:15 p.m., Drew said. Police could not confirm that a fire broke out in the building, but only that their fire protection system was somehow activated.
