Man Taken Down By Cop Dog After Alleged Carjacking

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A man was taken down by a police dog Thursday morning after allegedly carjacking a vehicle with a woman sleeping inside in south suburban Calumet City, then crashed it on the Far South Side.

About 2 a.m. Thursday, Calumet City police received a report of a vehicular hijacking at 1401 River Oaks Dr. and caught up with the vehicle as it traveled north on I-94, according to a release from Calumet City police.

The victim told police he was out of the vehicle when a suspect jumped inside and drove off while a woman was asleep in the passenger seat, the release said.

Officers pursued the vehicle to East 128th Street and South Exchange Avenue in Chicago, where the suspect crashed it and fled on foot. One police officer deployed a K-9 unit named Sara to pursue the suspect, who was taken down by the dog and arrested, the release said.

The woman in the vehicle was not injured and the suspect was taken to Saint Margaret Mercy Hospital in Hammond, Ind., for treatment of a dog bite.

The woman later told police she awoke to find the suspect driving. He allegedly pointed a black handgun at her and said, "Don't look at me." She reported the suspect noticed the patrol cars following and crashed, the release said.

No charges have been filed as of early Thursday afternoon and Calumet City police continue to investigate.
