Car Dragged 200 Feet By Semi In Plainfield

Driver Seriously Injured

PLAINFIELD, Ill. (STNG) ― A motorist was airlifted to a hospital after he slid a car under the trailer of a semi truck and was dragged about 200 feet Tuesday morning in southwest suburban Plainfield.

The motorist, a 30-year-old man, had to be extricated from the car.

About 4:30 a.m., the northbound semi truck was on US 30 in the intersection at 135th Street, when a red Taurus eastbound on 135th Street ran a red light and slammed into the side of the semi truck near the rear wheels, according to Plainfield police spokeman Jim Caliendo.

The Taurus ran under the trailer of the flat-bed semi, which not hauling anything, and was dragged about 200 feet. The fire department had to extricate the 30-year-old male driver from the Taurus, according to Plainfield Fire Department Deputy Chief Jon Stratton, who said the extrication took about 18 minutes.

The Taurus driver was airlifted by an Air Angels medical helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove in serious condition, Stratton said. The semi driver was not hurt.

Police were doing an accident reconstruction as of 6:30 a.m. and all lanes, except one eastbound lane on 135th Street from US 30, were closed to traffic, according to Caliendo, who said the streets would probably remained closed for about two more hours.

The driver of the Taurus will probably be cited for failing to obey a traffic control device when he is released from the hospital, Caliendo said.

It was unknown why the Taurus driver disobeyed the light and crashed.
