Off-Duty Officer Fires At Man On Far South Side

Man Wounded, But Unknown If It Was From Police Gunfire

CHICAGO (CBS) ― An off-duty police officer fired shots Friday night in an attempt to break up a gunfight on the Far South Side.

The officer saw two people shooting at each other at 8:36 p.m. Friday in the 12700 block of South Parnell Avenue, police News Affairs said.

He announced that he was a police officer, and a gunman pointed his weapon, prompting the officer to fire shots, police News Affairs said.

The gunman fled. Later, a man with a gunshot wound turned up at Roseland Community Hospital and was taken into custody, police said. It was unclear whether the man was wounded in the police shooting.

The incident is under investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority, police said.
