Viewer Comments On Barack Obama's Running Mate

Illinois U.S. Sen. Barack Obama is now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. We asked viewers who should be his running mate for the general election. Here are some of your answers:

I think the ultimate democratic ticket would be with Hillary Clinton as vice president. They couldn't lose! – Lois Bentley

I would love to see Edwards, but will take anyone EXCEPT Hillary. She will make a lot of us vote for McCain if she is in second seat. – marge arbaugh

I thought he would pick John Edwards, but since so many of his parishioners do not like whites, he is going to have a problem there. Someone of minority is the answer. Maybe Hispanic. – Maryann

It has to be Hillary. Even though they have differing viewpoints, he needs her on the ticket to gain votes that would otherwise go to McCain. – Clint Boone

Janet Napalotano, Governor of AZ. She is honest, fair and down to earth. Here in AZ most people do not like McCain but love Napalotano. I would be sad to loose her as our Governor but thrilled to see her in the White House. – Kim Nevarez

If he values his life, he won't chose Hillary. The Clintons took care of Vince Foster to further their political goals and will take care of him so she can be President.

Bill Richardson with experience on the international world would be a good choice -Audrey E. Lofton

I have studied theology in Hyde Park area for the last three years. I was once the worship leader for Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright at the Lutheran School of Theology in 2005 at the Wardlaw Lecture Series. I have a question I don't hear anyone else asking. Does it seem appropriate for Senator Obama to be asked to consider Senator Clinton for Vice President before she actually concede's the race for Democratic Nominee for President of the United States? Why should Senator Obama talk with her when she is being defiant for no good reason that makes sense,i.e. refusing to acknowledge him as the winner, showing all of the latent signs of disrespect? As far as Senator Obama or anybody else knows she is still running officially as a candidate against him. Should a military commander sign a truce with the enemy who is still defiant and apparently still on the field of battle? Senator Clinton needs to stop playing power politics to secure a position, concede and move on to something else, like unifying the Democratic Party behind Senator Obama. A Presidential candidate cannot be a leader when they do not know how to lose with grace. I would advise Senator Obama to pick a woman for Vice President but not Senator Clinton. --Rev. Dr. Dia Sekou Mari-Jata Pastor & Preaching Elder of the Nu African House of God in Christ, Cincinnati, Ohio.

For all the blathering by the pundints, there really is only one logical, intelligent choice - Mrs. Clinton. She has aleady proven that she can deliver all the voters and demographics that Obama can't and without her he risks losing the white house to the very same types of voters once referred to as Reagan Democrats. These voters are far more conservative than Obama's constituancy and want a candidate with experience and a proven track record. Yes, you've heard it before but it is still true. He would be insane to chose any other person for his VP. Clinton voters are loyalists and already have concerns about Obama on a lot of fronts. It won't take much to push them into McCain's camp or to write her name on the ballot. --Sherryl Arnett

I believe he should pick Joe Biden. He is tops on feorign Policy and National Security, one of McCains strengths. being born in a steel town and Catholic, helps as well. He has fought for voliolence against women and to keep guns of our tsreets. Plus hes a good man. --Randy

Hilary Clinton hands down no question. If the democrats want to win this election, we have to have a strong democratic party, if not, the chance of McCain winning are strong and our economy will be even more at stake, more people will suffer, more Soldiers and Marines will die in vain for nothing but one mans greed and a government behind it. We will be broke and more people will have to live on the streets, children will suffer. Obama and Clinton need to put their raise, pride and differences aside, because weather they are running or not, it's not about them, It's about the people, the hard working decent innocent people. Greed is also not an option for these two people. They need to team up, unite as one and become the fighting democrat party so we can leave the weak stuttering old fart McCain and the blood thirsty Republican party in defeat. Those who support McCain, are very selfish people who are not thinking about our troops and their lives and family, just them selfs. They are probably racist. But they don't want change they want another white man, another simple color, that's their theory, not change, not peace. Well they are the weak and we are the strong, and only the strong survive. But Actions will speak louder than words. --Gerardo M. Rivera

Anyone but clinton. Clinton is selfish and putting "HER PERSONAL INTEREST" Before the nation. Such rebellious attitudes can hurt the USA very deeply. --Ehi

Hillary Clinton should definitely be selected as the Democratic VP running mate to B. Obama. As a female businesswoman and democrat, my vote will ONLY go to Obama if Clinton is the running mate. Otherwise, I will change party lines and vote for McCain in November, and so will my family members who have been registered democrats and voted democratic in every presidential election since my father could first vote. Thank you ! --L. Dunham

Not Hillary, I think Obama is a smart guy and will pick the correct candidate. Hillary will cause descention to get her way as she has to try to undermine Obama as a viable candidate. It would be too much tension since she does not feel he is qualified she will resent being the 2nd in command. --Gwen

Obama should pick John Edwards as his running mate so it can be a complete change in the White House. Hillary is just going to bring back Bill's policy and thats going to be the same old white house. Why are people talking about experience when people with experience had already brought the down fall of the country. I know that this new strong intellegent people like Obama and John Edwards would turn around this country in a given time. I have heard too many empty promises and the rise in every thing making the middle class generation to become under low income group and losing everything we had built for the family. God Bless Obama and I pray that his family would bring light to all of us here in the United States. --Francis Joseph

Hillary Clinton of course. The two of them together would be unbeatable. That would be the perfect ticket, and help unite the democratic party. --Brenda

John Edwards or Claire McCaskill. As a lifelong democrat I think a few years ago Bill Clinton left us (democrats) at a terrible disadvantage when Al Gore ran against Bush. Much has happened since then...mostly bad. I've just heard "Clinton" enough already. Enough. No more surprises, no more grief. Enough already. --Ruth Martin

Who else but Clinton he needs her and if she had won she would need him together thay cant be stoped and thay will win by a land slide --Dave

It should not be Hillary Clinton. She is a divisive force, a destructive force. There are many good possibilities other than her. --Patricia Black

I used to think Hillary since I originally supported Hillary. However, I've turned away from her because of things her husband has said. I really think John Edwards would be perfect, and be able to pull the same type of voter that Hillary would. --Bettijane Forrester

I think Sam Nunn or Joe Biden would be a good choice. Each man has extensive foreign policy experience and very limited political baggage. Hillary Clinton's baggage could fill a trainful of empty boxcars. --Terry

anybody but hillary clinton. she is not a team player. she will not get him any signifigant amount of votes. she will try to steal the spotlight from him. she has too much baggage. --Frank

I like Catherine Kennedy --Debra

John Edwards! A man of honor and integrity, not a power hungry, ego crazed Clinton. Please don't sacrifice your ideals for the cheap promise of votes from the likes of the Billary Clintons. --Kenneth Holly

John Edwards for his southern support or Gov. Richardson if he can garner the Hispanic votes. Hillary Clinton??? A person that would Lie about something so simple and then try to excuse it as a "misspoke" and declares readiness to lead this country from day one, I don't think so. To use tears to gain empathy/sympathy from women that support her does not endear her to the number of women that have to deal on a daily basis with hard the issues of their lives and their families. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!! NO!!!!!! NEVER EVER!!!!!! --Jacqueline Robbins

John Edwards. Just like Obama is interested in bring americans together. -Wale

Hillary Clinton because she would bring in the other votes that Obama didn't get and they two together would do away with McCain and his Bush ideals. - tanya

I think Bill Richardson or Sam Nunn would be a good mix, or a qualified female governor. However, Hillary will not give the boost her supporters think. He has carried a message of hope and change and it would be a big mistake to have so much old establishment, including a former President who does not understand the words "supporting role." Lastly, a Obama/Hillary ticket would weaken him because in one of his first major decisions after securing the nomination he would come across as weak. He cannot and should not succumb to the pressure no matter how overwhelmingly. Plus, Hillary's decision to not concede last night was a slap in the face and lacked class - too much of a stark contrast to his persona. – Elaine Dickson

I believe Hillary Clinton should be his choice for VP. He will then be able to leverage her voting power in the swing states and her loyal constituency (professional and working women, Blue collar workers, etc.) If he chooses anyone else, there is very good chance he will lose to McCain. – Donna from Atlanta

think Mr. Obama should choose Mrs. Clinton as his running mate. I believe there would be no stopping the two of them. He has a vision and she has experience – Lisa M Fitzmaurice

Whomever HE wants. Should it be Hillary he will need to hire a food taster!!!! – patricia Edmonds

I think he should select Hillary Clinton. I think they would be a strong team for the democrats. The others that he has on his list are not well known. I want a democrat President and if he picks Hilary he will win. If he doesn't there will be a chance for another republican president. Do we really want that? No! – Lynn Miller

Governor Richardson of New Mexico is simply the most qualified person to be president. Also, he would bring strenth to the Obama team in foreign policy and aid in understanding the frustrations and dreams of the Latino/Hispanic community. – John B. Ross

Hilary Clinton I beleive she would have won if she had'nt made those few mistakes one about sniper fire and the other I can't recall at this moment. During the debates she actually had solutions with details not just talking about what she would do but explained how she would accomplish the tasks. She has the experience and she saw what worked and what didn't work in the past. We all make mistakes, that is the human side of us. I believe we learn from our mistakes. Hilary learned from hers, Bill's and Bush's because she have been there. She knowns her way around Washington and the politics. I believe having an Obama and Clinton ticket is just the Ticket we need to beat out the McCains and Bushes. Personally I voted for Hilary and if she is not part of it, frankly I would rather vote Republican. While Obama does have many good points, he lax a certain about of expreance. – teresa jones

Anyone but Hillary Clinton. She is far too polarizing a candidate and, as witnessed during this primary, willing to say or do anything to be in the spotlight or to attain power. It does not support the message he is running on and it does not represent change. He is a strong enough candidate without her and all the baggage the Clinton's bring. As for money, his organization has already proved they can raise funds at extraordinary levels and do not need her supporters. – Iris Jones

I think that Senator Obama should choose Admiral Fallon (retired) because this man would bring "instant" foreign policy legitimacy to the ticket. Admiral Fallon would also add someone who would enhance Obama's integrity and principles, in that Admiral Fallon resigned rather than give in to the bush administrations insane rush to invade Iran. I believe that we need more men and women in washington who have "real values". Not the christian BS values that mouth one thing but supports bombing and killing innocent men, women, and children because they won't give up their oil and other natural resources for pennies so that people in this country can continue to drive gas guzzlers for under $3 a gallon. Ambassador Joe Wilson or Valerie Plame for the obvious reasons of fair play and "get back". In addition to the fact that both have foreign policy experience. Other people that deserve mention are Scott Ritter, Richard Clarke, Joe Biden, Russ Feingold. – Donald Johnson

Im going to go with the governeor of Virginia. Just a BIG NO to Clinton though. She will cause problems for him in the white house. He doesn't need Hillary and Bill running around the capitol undermining his power as president. Its a bad idea. She still talks as if she will be president and is extremely ungracious. The night Obama won the nomination she had terry M on the Jon Stewart show saying "you can kiss my ass Barack Obama". Hillary would destroy the nation in order to assuage her own ego at this point. – Brian

Hillary Clinton. I am an Independent who leans Democratic. I was 110% for Sen. Clinton. I think that Sen. Obama should select her as his running mate. I would vote for an Obama-Clinton ticket unless my governor, Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, is Sen. McCain's running mate. If neither Sen. Clinton nor Gov. Pawlenty is a vice presidential candidate, I'll stay home. – Hannah

I think Obama should consider John Edwards as his running mate. I believe he has the same base as Senator Clinton did and he will be able to gain the women vote.... – Denise Morgan

I'm amazed at Hillary Clinton's audacity and hope Sen Obama realizes that should he cave to pressure and select Sen Clinton, he'll regret the decision once in office. I have no doubt she'll ignore his wishes and do as she thinks best, which is always in her favor. How about John Edwards? He's intelligent, knowledgable, and what's more, he demonstrates class, such as the kind Sen Obama has shown. That would make as strong, if not stronger, ticket as Obama & Clinton. I, for one, hold such mistrust of either Clinton that I would vote for McCain rather than a ticket with her name. – Brian Seaton

I believe that Hillary Clinton should be his running mate. Throughout the election they both had similar plans for change in our country. The two of them have divided the democratic votes because people see that they both bring something to the table- change. Same vision - different paths great combination. In order for them to be successful they have to pray daily for our nation and be willing to work together. If Obama selects anyone else, the chances of McCain being president is much greater. I pray that God will give him a clear vision because God is the one who has brought him this far. – Maria

Charles Hagle because he needs someone with itegrity whom he can trust and also to shorten the partisan cannon that divides this country. - Jerrold McKinley Ivery

Bill Richardson would provide experience in so many facets of the federal government: in foreign policy and in legislative in department management. – Trudy Z

Barack Obama should choose a political leader that can deliver a state (or more), such as Gov. Jim Webb of Virginia. Senator Obama should NOT choose Hillary Clinton as his V.P., not only because she happens to be one of the most divisive figures in Washington, but because she cannot deliver a state to Barack, every state that she can win, Obama can win on his own, without the Clinton liability. – SA

Hagle. Checkmate. – Pat Thrbon

anybody but Hillary – DAn

I personally think that he should take BILL RICHARDSON as his VP. Mainly because Bill has Foreign Policy experience and because he would also bring aboard the Latino's voters. He endorsed Barrack and he has proved he can work both sides of the divide. – virginia

The one person that definitely should be considered is: Mr. Colon Powell – Q

Any qualified woman EXCEPT Hillary. A woman would bring in Hillary's "glass ceiling" voters. But NOT Hillary, he can't trust her and would have Bill breathing down his neck all the time. – Camille Olsen

Ted Strickland Clinton supporter, Ohio popularity, working class positioning – Oakland Dad

Barack requires an extremely strong running mate. Someone with knowledge, know-how, experience, and wisdom. That someone is Hillary Clinton. - Sandra

Bill Richardson Vast experience in foreign policy, administration, energy He also represents the growing populations of Hispanic/Latino citizens. - GBK

Someone who has more Washington experience to balance out his ticket. Don't care if he or she is white, black, or even pink. - Im AnAmerican

Please not Hillary, although she has political power, she does not fit the Obama message. She is old Washington using old tricks and "misstatements" and Bill hanging around could make the white house a circus. I can just imagine him trying to runs things behind the scenes--like Cheney... – J Gill

senator jim webb because of his military background and he has character i live in virginia and we all think he is pretty cool and straight forward i don't think he loves war as john mccain does so he would promote diplomacy and joe biden as secretary of state that is a good team joe does have a good plan for iraq it just might work - jeanise

I would hope that Hillary Clinton could be the ideal running mate if her people would come down off the high horse and quit being so arogant. If they can come together it would be a no brainer win. – Michael Hall

Hillary Clinton should be the next VP. Barack and Hillary together will do more to unite this country and ensure a victory in november. The U.S. CANNOT endure four more years of Bush Policies. We have severley injured our reputation overseas and have torn apart our economy. Dont let the republicans fool you...The Rich Elitists in this country will continue to get rich and the poor will get poorer adding to our economic woes and social problems. Obama and Clinton together will have a greater vision and know how on how to make America great once again. – Francis Rojas

Al Gore. If Gore had been elected vs Bush the first time the whole mess may have been a different story. America can right the wrong by getting him back on board even as a VP. He also has tons of experience that can help to silence Obamas critics on that front though i feel Obama has enough exp. – Harry

Hillary Clinton would be the best running mate. Obama seems like the kind of guy who can put past political games in the past and call them what they are: "politics." Regardless of who he chooses as his running mate, Obama has a good chance of winning against McCain. If he chooses Clinton as his running mate, her supporters will swarm to support him and he can expect a landslide victory. – Julia

I believe that Barack Obama/John Edwards campaign ticket would be a strong force. Both men have similar views that Washington is out of touch with what's happening across the country and that the Democrats must stand up to this president, stand up for what's right, so he does not continue to forget about the middle class/poor class in this country. I feel this combination could bring on the "change" that Americans are looking for, waiting for, praying for. – Barbara Skocz

I think John kerry should be selected because of his experince in foreign policy. – Sheila Saunders

Gorvernor Kathaleen Sebelius Governor Richardson in that order ! – rachel hunter

I can tell you without a doubt he should not choose Hillary Clinton. Others have agreed with me that many Republicans and Independants are inspired by the new direction offered by Senator Obama especially with regards to proper foreign relations and uniting the country's spirit. Hillary just represents everything we are tired of. Senator Clinton is devisive, appears insincere(dishonest), and a representation of politics as usual. The politics of Clintons and Bushes are a reminder of the past that needs to stay in the past. This country craves moving forward. – Smith Hartley

Hillary Clinton and why because this obama needs someone stable near him if he should accidently become president. Thank you. – Jim Evers
