It could be just a matter of hours before Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama announces his running mate. This morning, he is at a Town Hall meeting with one possible candidate - Virginia governor Tim Kaine. With the Democratic Convention just around the corner, Obama hype is in full gear.
CBS 2's Joanie Lum reports that in an unmarked office building on Lake street in the loop, Obama supporters can purchase campaign t-shirts, bumper stickers and buttons.
The store opened Monday and doubles as the Illinois campaign headquarters, the hub of volunteer training and phone banking. The office manager says, even though the store isn't easy to find, they are selling a lot of merchandise.
Meanwhile, supporters say they are eager to hear who Barack Obama will choose as his running mate.
"We were talking about Hillary Clinton, but I don't know if it should be to tell you the truth, just because I think that would really split the vote," said Chicagoan Lauren Heniff. "I don't think a lot of Hillary Clinton's people that liked her would go for the fact that she is teaming up with Barack Obama."
"If you are going to lead the way, you have to choose the one that you are in the same wavelength," said Ben Antioquia, tourist.
"He's gonna pick Evan Bayh, the guy from Indiana," said Chicagoan Cranston Allen. "That's who I think he's gonna pick."
Senator Obama has an appearance scheduled this weekend in Indianapolis. Today he is at a town hall meeting with Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia, who is also on the short list of vice-presidential possibilities.
Obama will be back in Illinois this weekend. On Saturday, he has a rally scheduled in Springfield the place where he began his campaign for president. It is also the place it is believed he will formally announce his running mate.
