March To Commemorate Matthew Shepard Murder

Young Gay Man Was Brutally Beaten In Wyoming, Later Died

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A march this weekend will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the murder of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man whose brutal slaying in Wyoming brought national attention to the issue of anti-gay violence.

The 10th Annual Matthew Shepard March for LGBT Freedom is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Halsted and Roscoe streets. The march is intended to highlight the continued need to combat anti-gay violent crime, according to the Gay Liberation Network.

The group said the march "will look at the past decade of anti-LGBT violence to demonstrate that Matthew Shepard was but one of many victims of such violence, and that much more progress still needs to be made for true LGBT freedom."

Gay rights activist and author Wayne Besen is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the event.

Shepard was beaten and tied to a fence in Laramie, Wyo., and later died of his injuries on Oct. 12, 1998. Russell Arthur Henderson and Aaron James McKinney were convicted of Shepard's murder the following year and are both serving life prison terms.
