Man Accidentally Shoots Brother, Commits Suicide

Brother In Critical Condition

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A man fatally shot himself after accidentally shooting his brother in the head late Sunday near the South Side's Englewood neighborhood, police said.

A 28-year-old man accidentally shot his 18-year-old brother in the head while shooting at a dog in the 1300 block of West 71st Street, according to police News Affairs. The initial shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities said the man was shooting at a dog that had bitten his brother and accidentally shot his brother in the head while aiming for the dog.

About a half-mile away and a half hour later, the shooter fled the scene in a car and was stopped by police at 7000 S. Halsted St. As officers approached his car, the man put a gun to his head and fired, police said.

Brandon Thomas, of 14420 S. Dearborn St. in Riverdale, was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 12:12 a.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

Thomas' brother was said to be in critical condition at the hospital Monday morning, according to police News Affairs.
