Man Charged In Murder Sparked By 'Love Triangle'

Sylvester Porch Was Allegedly Shot Dead By Girlfriend's New Boyfriend

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A man has been charged with murder for an Aug. 17 South Side slaying that was reportedly sparked by a "love triangle."

Demetrius McCafferty, 20, of an unidentified address in Gary, Ind., was charged with murder, according to a source. McCafferty, who turned himself in to police with his attorney at 6 a.m. Monday, was expected to appear for a bond hearing later Wednesday in Cook County Criminal Court, 2600 S. California Ave. in Violence Court (Br. 66).

The shooting occurred about 11:30 p.m. Aug. 17 in an apartment building at 638 W. Garfield Blvd. Witnesses heard a disturbance and found the victim lying on the floor of the hallway suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

Sylvester Porch, 19, of 7325 S. King Dr., was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital of Cook County at 12:17 a.m. on Aug. 18. An autopsy the next day determined Porch died of multiple wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Porch was allegedly shot by his girlfriend's new boyfriend, according to a source, who said Porch arrived at an apartment inside the Garfield address where the woman was and began fighting with the other man.

During the altercation, Porch was shot inside the apartment unit and ran out into the hallway, where he collapsed on the floor.

No one else was hurt in the incident and the gunman, whose identity was known by police, fled afterwards.

Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.
