Explosion Tears Through Lockport Metals Plant

Busy Route 53 Closed Down

LOCKPORT, Ill. (CBS) ― An explosion rocked a metals processing plant in southwest suburban Lockport early Wednesday, forcing authorities to shut down busy roads nearby.

A processing unit at the Toyal America plant, at 17401 S. Broadway in Lockport, exploded in the 5 a.m. hour, leaving sheets corrugated tin dangling precariously and a fire blazing inside.

No injuries were reported at the explosion.

Several fire companies were sent to the scene, and authorities blocked busy Route 53 between Caton Farm Road and Division Street. The roads were reopening by 6:30 a.m.

The plant is a short distance from the Stateville Correctional Center.
