CHICAGO (AP) ― There was a fire this morning in a television transmitter on the 101st floor of Chicago's Sears Tower.

Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says the fire in a malfunctioning 100-kilowatt television transmitter serving Channel 60 was a small one that created a lot of smoke. There were no injuries.

Langford says the 101st floor is a machine level that houses mostly transmitters that connect to rooftop antennae. There are no offices on the floor, and an evacuation was not required.

An extra alarm was sounded that brought extra equipment to the scene as a precaution.

Fire department personnel remained on the scene after the fire was extinguished to make certain there were no flare-ups, and to ventilate the building.
