NORTHLAKE, Ill. (CBS) ― Authorities are trying to figure out what caused high levels of carbon monoxide in a west suburban apartment building, leaving four people hospitalized.

People inside the building at 58 E. North Ave. in Northlake reported a foul smell all day.

The carbon monoxide alarm went off, but residents dismissed it, thinking it came from an office below them.

But firefighters were called to the scene when people started collapsing. High levels of natural gas and carbon monoxide were found inside.
