Dunkin' Donuts Faces Critical Health Violations

City Franchises Had 24 Critical Violations In One Year

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Chances are you've eaten donuts from this famous chain, but you'd be surprised at how many critical violations some of its stores have received in the last year.

CBS 2's Jon Duncanson looks at that and tells us what inspectors found when they went to one Dunkin' Donuts franchise location this week. Another reminder that we eat at our own risk.

Health Inspector Franklin Jenkins arrived at 7578 N. Western Ave. to investigate a complaint, saying there is food on the floor, that the ice cream is too warm and the whipped cream too.

Under the critical eye of Health Inspector Franklin Jenkins, floor debris vanishes.

But the whipped cream should be a cold 40 degrees or lower, and it's above 70.

The rules say the manager on duty must be sanitation certified.

"He does not have a certificate. That's another violation. Warrants a citation," Jenkins said.

The ice machine model is not approved.

Not only that, "there's some kind of soiled piece of sticker or paper. You can see the obvious soil on it," Jenkins said.

Inspectors tell us that statistically restaurants that stay open 24 hours are more likely to get citations because they never really get a chance to shut down to clean up.

CBS 2 News filed a freedom of information request and found at least 24 critical violations cited by the Department of Public Health alone against city Dunkin' Donunts franchises in a one year period.

In fact, Mayor Daley's dumpster task force closed a Dunkin' Donuts at Clark and Belmont on Aug. 23 for rodent infestation. It has since been reopened.

Back at the Dunkin' Donuts on Western, inspectors find an open garbage container with insects within distance of the drive through window.

"That's a citation. Altogether, you know," Jenkins said.

And a reminder that you always: Eat At Your Own Risk.

We asked Dunkin' Donuts to respond to these health violations.

The company says, "The health and safety of our customers is our top priority."

And in regard to the store at 7578 N. Western, the company said, "The franchisee has corrected all the issues addressed during the inspection."
