Popular Rockford Ice Cream Vendor Slain

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) ― Rockford police are investigating that city's ninth homicide of the year -- the shooting death of an ice cream vendor known locally only as "The Roadrunner."

The vendor, who was said to have been in his 50s, was shot several times in the head on Rockford's near west side yesterday evening and was pronounced dead at Swedish American Hospital.

Other vendors said the man was a fixture at major summer festivals in Rockford and was known as "The Roadrunner" because of how fast he pushed his cart. They said they believe he was from Chicago and would stay at a brother's home in Pecatonica while peddling ice cream at weekend events in Rockford.
