Woman Shoots 3 Cops; Officers Kill Woman
Woman Fired Shotguns At Police Responding To Domestic Disturbance
CBS 2's Katie McCall, Kristyn Hartman, Joanie Lum and the STNG Wire contributed to this report.
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
A domestic disturbance call Sunday night ended with three Chicago police officers shot. An argument about money apparently touched off the violence that sent three officers to the hospital.
As CBS 2's Joanie Lum reports, there is new information about the Chicago woman who opened fire on police officers Sunday night.
The officers shot and killed a woman who was firing a shotgun in her West Side apartment building. Dorothy Williams-Johnson, 50, was pronounced dead at 12:05 a.m. on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Kenya Miller was diapering her 2-week-old baby boy when she heard the gun blast coming from the apartment above her.
"We heard this loud boom, the firefighters came and rung the doorbell," Miller said. "They said somebody got shot with a shotgun."
The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. Sunday.
Police say when they arrived, they heard the gun being re-loaded. They broke down the door of the second floor apartment and exchanged fire with Johnson.
"The first shot went through the ceiling, the next two," Miller said. "We moved back toward the closet."
Miller, her baby, her boyfriend and aunt were trapped because the first shots penetrated over the bedroom door.
Police say Johnson fired at them twice, hitting three of the four police officers on the scene. They fired back, killing her.
The injured officers were released from area hospitals by Monday afternoon.
Police say Johnson shared the apartment with a woman who wasn't home at the time of the shootings.
"Her relatives were coming to collect Dorothy Johnson's portion of the rent, an argument ensued. Johnson obtained a shotgun," said Deputy Chief Michael Chasen of the Chicago Police Department.
The incident was initially reported as a domestic battery, Police News Affairs Director Monique Bond said, adding four other people were in the apartment.
Bond said, "What was going on inside the building, we don't know. We do know police responded to a female armed with a shotgun, waving the gun outside the window."
As for the officers, one had a graze wound to the head, the other two had bullet wounds to their arms. The injuries aren't life-threatening.
The police Office of Professional Standards will conduct a roundtable discussion to assess the actions of the officers sometime Monday, Bond said.
Grand Central Area detectives are investigating. Police say Johnson had been arrested 13 times in the past, a number of those on charges of domestic battery.
