Simple Ways To Back Up Your Cell Phone Information

New Devices Can Save Your Phone Book, Sanity

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Losing your cell phone – and all the important information stored inside – can be a nightmare.

CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports on simple ways to back-up your information.

If you lose your phone, you can lose your connection to your world.

"I'd be really upset and probably my mom would think I'm dead because I don't even know her number," said one cell phone user.

Mom and everyone else are programmed into our electronic phone books, so without them, we'd have to start from scratch. Unless, of course, you have a back-up.

There are a number of systems that can save your phone numbers and your sanity.

Verizon is one of many cell providers that offer a feature that will automatically back-up your contract information on a daily basis. It's an option on your headset. Follow the prompts and you can transfer your numbers to Verizon's Web site in seconds.

"The contact information is stored on a very secure Web site that's password protected so you can download your numbers wherever," said Verizon's Nikki Learakos.

This feature will cost you $1.99 a month. If you don't want the monthly fee, you can buy a device called Data Pilot for $80.

Once you download the software into the computer, you take the cable, insert one end into the telephone and put the other into the computer.

After a few clicks, you've saved your precious phone book. Data Pilot was one of the first back-up systems on the market. The latest fits in the palm of your hand, and it's called a Cellstik. Attach the device to your phone and transfer all your numbers to the Cellstik.

"At that point, you put the Cellstik aside or if you can put it into your PC and edit the contents," said Spark Technology's Randy Lee.

Cell phone users appreciate these back-up options.

"It is a sense of security knowing I have a way to retrieve numbers," said another cell phone user.

The devices like Cellstik and Data Pilot work on a number of different phones, but you need to check out their Web sites to see if your phone is compatible.
